Botanicals in Skin Care: Where Nature Meets Science

Botanical ingredients have been used in skin care for centuries. Today, science is helping us better understand which plant-derived ingredients may actually benefit the skin—and how they should be formulated to work effectively.

But natural does not automatically mean better.

When I look at botanical skin care, there are a few things that really matter to me: the ingredients should come from trustworthy and traceable sources, their benefits should be supported by science, and they should be incorporated into formulations that are stable, safe, and cosmetically pleasant enough that people actually enjoy using them.

Research suggests that certain plant-derived compounds—including polyphenols, flavonoids and other antioxidants—may help protect the skin against oxidative stress and influence pathways involved in inflammation, pigmentation, skin barrier function and skin aging. At the same time, the evidence is much stronger for some botanicals than for others, which is why formulation and scientific validation matter.

Why KAYURA has become one of my favorites

KAYURA has become one of my favorite skin care lines because it keeps skin care simple, science-based, and effective.

It covers what I consider the ABC of healthy skin: cleanse, moisturize, and protect, while incorporating carefully selected botanicals and active ingredients for additional antioxidant and healthy-aging benefits.

It’s a combination I value: trusted ingredients, thoughtful formulation, science, and products that are enjoyable enough to use every day.

Why Reapplying Sunscreen Matters

Many people do a great job applying sunscreen in the morning—but often forget that sunscreen does not last all day.

Even the best sunscreen gradually loses effectiveness due to sweat, natural skin oils, touching your face, swimming, exercise, and normal daily activities. As a result, your skin may become more vulnerable to UV damage as the day goes on.

Why Is Reapplication Important?

UV exposure is one of the main contributors to:

  • Premature aging (wrinkles and loss of elasticity)
  • Dark spots and uneven pigmentation
  • Sunburn
  • Skin cancer
  • Worsening of conditions such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Applying sunscreen only once in the morning may not provide adequate protection throughout the day, especially if you spend time outdoors.

When Should I Reapply?

Dermatologists recommend reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors. If you work indoors most of the day, one morning application and a noon reaplication may provide reasonable protection.

You should also reapply after:

  • Swimming
  • Excessive sweating
  • Towel drying
  • Outdoor exercise

“But I’m Wearing Makeup”

Good news—you don’t have to start over.

Today there are many convenient options for reapplication:

  • Sunscreen powders
  • Sunscreen sticks
  • Spray sunscreens
  • Lightweight SPF fluids

These products make it easier to maintain protection without disrupting your makeup.

Think of Sunscreen Like a Seatbelt

Putting on sunscreen in the morning is an excellent first step—but reapplying it is what helps maintain protection throughout the day.

A few extra seconds can help protect your skin from years of cumulative sun damage.

Our Recommendation

Make sunscreen reapplication part of your daily routine—especially if you spend time outdoors. Consistent protection is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your skin healthy, youthful, and protected for years to come.

Extreme Cold Weather & Skin Health

Skin is a living, dynamic organ that constantly adapts to its environment. During periods of extreme cold, low humidity, and harsh wind, the skin’s protective barrier is placed under significant stress. Winter conditions don’t just cause dryness, they disrupt the skin’s ability to protect, repair, and maintain balance.

At Shah Dermatology, we view winter skin care as an essential part of overall skin health. Protecting the barrier during cold weather helps prevent irritation, flares of chronic skin conditions, and long-term damage. Healthy, resilient skin in winter requires thoughtful, proactive care built on three essential pillars:

  1. Barrier-Focused Home Skin Care

Daily skincare becomes even more important in cold weather. Low humidity and indoor heating increase transepidermal water loss, leaving skin vulnerable to dryness, itching, and sensitivity.

A winter skincare routine should prioritize:

  • Rich, lipid-replenishing moisturizers
  • Gentle, fragrance-free cleansers
  • Immediate moisturizing after bathing to lock in hydration
  1. Protective Environmental Strategies

Cold wind, temperature shifts, and dry indoor air weaken the skin barrier and increase irritation. Simple protective habits make a meaningful difference in preventing winter skin problems.:

  • Limiting hot showers that strip natural oils
  • Using a humidifier to restore moisture to indoor air
  • Wearing gloves and scarves to protect exposed skin
  • Applying lip balm and barrier ointments before going outdoors
  1. Managing Winter Skin Conditions Early

Cold weather can worsen existing dermatologic conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and chronic dry skin. Cracks, flares, and persistent irritation should not be ignored, as they can lead to infection or prolonged inflammation.

Early intervention may include:

  • Medical-grade moisturizers
  • Anti-inflammatory prescription treatments
  • Barrier repair therapies tailored to sensitive winter skin

If rashes, itching, or irritation do not improve with these measures, it is important to consult a board-certified dermatologist for proper evaluation and personalized treatment. Early professional care can prevent complications and help restore the skin barrier more effectively.

A New Vision of Aesthetic Dermatology

Aesthetic dermatology has evolved. Today, it is no longer about trends, excess, or transforming faces. It is about science, skin health, and understanding the skin as a living, dynamic organ.

At Shah Dermatology, we believe that healthy skin is beautiful skin, and achieving it requires a thoughtful, personalized, and holistic approach. Modern aesthetic care goes beyond isolated treatments. True, lasting results come from the synergy of three essential pillars:

  1. Professionally Guided Home Skin Care

Daily skincare is the foundation of skin health. When it is medically guided and personalized, it supports barrier function, cellular renewal, and long-term skin quality.

  1. Conservative, Science-Based In-Office Treatments

Regenerative and conservative procedures, such as neuromodulators, hyaluronic acid fillers, biostimulatory treatments, microneedling, and peels, are most effective when used strategically, respectfully, and with restraint. The goal is enhancement, not alteration.

  1. Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Nutrition, sleep, stress management, movement, and sun protection all play a critical role in skin aging and repair. Skin reflects overall health, and caring for one supports the other.
